Open Source October is officially live at GDGoC PSIT.
For the entire month of October, we are creating a space where PSIT students can move beyond tutorials and personal projects and actually experience what it is like to contribute to a shared codebase.
Through GDGoC Hacktober 2026, students can explore projects maintained by GDGoC PSIT, pick issues that match their interests and skills, work on them with other contributors, and submit their changes through the usual GitHub workflow.
The initiative runs throughout 5 October to 31 October 2026, giving contributors the time to learn, build, get feedback, and make meaningful contributions instead of trying to finish everything in a single day.
What Are We Doing?
We have prepared projects where students can contribute across areas such as:
Web Development β’ Backend β’ Mobile Development β’ UI/UX β’ Database β’ Testing β’ Documentation
The idea is not to give everyone the same task.
You can explore the available projects, understand what they are about, look through their issues, and choose something that fits your current skills or gives you a chance to learn something new.
Once you pick an issue, you work on the solution, submit a pull request, and go through the review process with the project maintainers.
The basic journey looks like this:
Choose a Project β Pick an Issue β Build β Raise a PR β Get Reviewed β Complete Your Contribution
And We Built a Platform for the Whole Process
To run Hacktober at this scale, we built our own GDGoC PSIT Hacktober Tracking System.
Instead of keeping contribution details across different spreadsheets and messages, the platform brings the process into one place.
You can use it to explore projects and issues, keep track of your contribution activity, and follow the progress of your submissions.
The platform also maintains verified contribution records and includes a leaderboard so you can see how participants are progressing throughout the month.
( shh insider info π€« : a lot of goodies are there for people who make it to the leaderboard. )
Because this initiative is exclusively for PSIT students, the platform also has a PSIT student authentication and verification system.
This Is More Than Collecting PRs
The point of Hacktober is not to open five tiny pull requests just to increase a number.
It is about learning how software is actually built when you are not the only person working on it.
You will have to understand an existing project, read someone else's code, figure out what an issue is asking for, make your changes carefully, create a pull request, respond to feedback, and work towards getting your contribution accepted.
That is where the real learning happens.
By the end of the month, we want you to be more comfortable not only with Git and GitHub, but with working inside a project that belongs to a community rather than just yourself.
Who Can Participate?
Any currently enrolled PSIT student interested in contributing to open source can take part.
You do not need to already be an expert in open source.
Pick an issue that matches where you are right now, ask questions when you get stuck, collaborate with other contributors, and learn while working on the project.
Ready to Contribute?
